Weekly Home Maintenance Tip: Honey-Do Friday
My life in real estate this week has reminded me of the importance of home maintenance so I am reviving Honey-Do Friday to remind you to be sure to take care of your castle. Like you need more stuff to do in your time off. Here’s the deal – I can stage the hell out of your house when it’s time to sell but it’s up to you to maintain your home so it passes home inspections. Looking good and being good are two very different things. And unfortunately not being good can and will send your buyers running.
Here are 3 quick things for honey-do Friday and this weekend before it turns to winter in Overland Park:
- Exterior walk around – take a few minutes and walk around your house checking for cracks and crevices around windows and doors. You may need to add some caulk to prevent cold air from coming in and warm air leaking out. This one tip will also save you money on your utilities.
- Disconnect your outside hoses and turn off your outside spigots – you should have done this by Thanksgiving but I didn’t remind you and you may not have remembered with all the shopping and distractions going on. But if you don’t do this and bring your hoses inside, you’ll have lots less money for shopping when you have a pipe that bursts. Google how to turn off your outside spigots. It depends on the age of your house. There’s a YouTube this one to find out what works for your home.
- Check your gutters – if this is the weekend you are hanging your Christmas lights make sure your gutters are free of leaves and debris. This is the main cause of ice dams that can occur when that melting snow can’t get through your downspouts and off your roof. When it has nowhere else to go, it will find a way into your home. And if you’ve ever experienced an ice dam, you’ll be saying more than damn. Let’s see…that will be a roofer and a guy to fix your ceiling or walls that are now your latest homeowner headache.
Nobody likes to do these things but believe me, a few minutes spent over the weekend will prevent pesky dead of winter nightmares later. A little preventative maintenance will save you thousands of dollars over time. Home ownership comes with home maintenance. And unfortunately, as the homeowner, you may also be the maintenance provider. Over time, I promise you will appreciate honey-do Friday.
Have a great weekend and if you need anyone to do any of these maintenance items, call me direct at (913) 515-3250 or contact me here.
