3 Tips to Prevent Termites
Spring is upon us and here are my best 3 tips to prevent termites. In this part of the country, subterranean termites are the largest wood destroying pests that can and will destroy your home. There are a number of simple, inexpensive measures you can take to either prevent or reduce the risk of your home getting termites.
The treatment for termites is costly. As a homeowner, your goal should be in preventing the conditions for termites to thrive. They are looking for moisture in order to survive. They construct narrow tunnels through the soil to reach food. They also carry soil above ground to build mud tubes. The moist soil also protects them from the environment as well as their predators like birds and ants.
Wood is their main source of food. They can feed on dead wood like tree stumps or on the mulch you use in your landscaping. They first start feeding on wood that is closest to the soil. From there, they can gain access to the rest of the floors of your house by travelling upward. They can and will destroy your house.
My best 3 tips to prevent termites
- Mulch levels should be several inches below your siding
- Minimize using mulch right next to your foundation
- Never store firewood or any kind of wood against your foundation
These three simple steps can save you thousands of dollars in termite treatments and repairs. The unseen damage they can do to your house is ridiculous.
This week’s home maintenance tip is simple. Call and make an appointment to have your house inspected for termites. Many of the termite companies will do a free inspection. Get your house checked now and do it every spring to prevent termites. Don’t delay! It’s inexpensive preventative maintenance. Remember, it’s your money that you can spend on something fun instead of termites.
