Buying a Home in Overland Park? Who is Influencing You?
If you are a home buyer, you will almost always have outside influencers helping you make a decision when it comes to buying a home in Overland Park. This is usually always true if you are a first time buyer and especially if you are a single female.
I remember receiving a call from a man in Iowa whose daughter was going to be buying a home here and he asked me to help her. I met with the daughter and we established a good working relationship.
Going into the transaction, I asked her if there would be anyone else involved in her decision making process and she told me her dad would want to come down and look at the house before she made an offer. We actually found a house she was interested in but we felt it was horribly overpriced so we moved on. But during that decision making process, dad was very involved in helping her make a decision. And waiting for dad to travel to Kansas City on the spur of the moment could cost her a house. We’re not in that kind of market. If you don’t act now, you may not get the home of your dreams.
Words of wisdom
While this is a good practice, here are some words of advice. Parents want the best for their children. However, at the end of the day, you are the one who will be living in the house. You will be the one paying for the house and YOU have to love it.
I remember while working with Ashley (what’s a girl to do with a pedestal sink). She found a house she loved. After doing some research, it appeared the systems were very old and I actually told her I didn’t think it would be a good investment on her part. She wanted her family to see the house the following day and everyone agreed with me that she should keep looking. One of her relatives said to me that the house was very old. What she didn’t understand was that based on where Ashley wanted to live and her income, she would be buying an older house.
How to deal with the influencers
Your friends and relatives may influence your decision on the house you buy but you sometimes have to let them know as much as you appreciate their input, at the end of the day, it’s your decision. Nobody can “pick” your house for you just as they can’t pick your mate for you. It’s personal to you. It’s the feeling you get about the home. It’s the home you can see living in and taking care of. Listen to their advice, thank them for their concerns and then make your own decision. For the single gals, if your parents never liked any of your boyfriends they probably won’t like any of the Overland Park houses you’re considering buying either.
And remember, many of your family members maybe haven’t bought a home for awhile. So, while they mean well, they don’t always understand the real estate market or your personal situation regarding your finances.
