Downsizing in Overland Park – 5 Steps to Make Life Easier
The Parade of Homes always gets people thinking about downsizing in Overland Park. Is now the time to make the move? And for empty nesters, boomers or seniors, it’s a definite process.
No matter what you choose to call it – downsizing, rightsizing or just plain moving on – it’s going to happen. Have you been dreaming about selling your Overland Park home? Do you envision yourself living somewhere other than where you are now? Do you see yourself on the golf course, lake, or in a smaller, maintenance provided community of other people much like you?
Hardly a week goes by that I don’t run into someone who tells me they want to move but it’s too overwhelming. My post, “Are You Living in House Hell?” sums it up for many people. They are living in a home that no longer serves them. Funny thing is, many people would rather stay where they are and be unhappy than to move on to a home that would suit their current needs, wants and desires.
Pharrell Williams said on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, “you deserve to be happy.” Are you happy where you live or do you wish you were living somewhere else? Life is short. Don’t rob yourself of being happy in your surroundings. Your home sets your mood for everything that happens in your life. It starts your day and in essence how your day will go.
5 Questions to Ask Yourself
- Are you living in and enjoying your current home?
- Do you envision your next home and wish you could snap your fingers and it would just happen?
- Do you have a lot of projects to complete before selling your home but you don’t even know what they are or where to start?
- Do you think it will go away as long as you don’t address it?
- Are you wondering when your next move is going to happen?
My Own Downsizing in Overland Park Experience
These may seem like hard questions but they are important for you to be able to move on. I know. I personally chose to move on from my monstrosity a few years ago. I was living in a big 3,500 square foot home, 5 bedrooms, 4 ½ baths where I hadn’t ever used one of the toilets upstairs. I dearly loved the house but really only the first floor. “If I just had this part of the house – it would be perfect,” is what I would say to myself. After all, it was a lot to keep up with for a single gal. For several years, my kids had tried to convince me to move and deep down inside I knew I needed to do it. But just like everything else, it had to be on my terms and it was on the back burner. And then the morning came. I called my daughter who lived in Chicago and told her I was ready. She came to help me get started. That was when I knew I needed a plan and a stick of dynamite to launch it.
Your next move is inevitable. It will come. And until you choose to plan it out, it’s not going to get any easier. You’ll have more stuff, your house will probably need more maintenance and updating and you’re going to be older. Don’t wait until it’s too late and your kids have to bail you out. It’s your responsibility to create your plan, sell your house and move on to the next phase of your life. Downsizing in Overland Park isn’t easy but you’ve got to do it.
I’m currently working with a couple in their 80’s. Their house will be on the market soon. While I was there last weekend, they told me their bedroom furniture was from the ‘70’s. I brought in my bag of tricks to liven up their master bedroom. Keith and Marilyn told me to do what I needed to sell the house. They gave me permission to work my magic because they are ready to move on.
It’s your choice where and how you live your life. But if you’re thinking you’d like to figure out how to move on to your next phase of life, check out my “Downsizing 5 Year Plan” or call me at (913) 515-3250 and let’s have a 15 minute conversation to see if what I do can work for you.
