How to Control Odors in Your Overland Park Home for Sale

If you want to know about controlling odors in your Overland Park home for sale, please read last week’s blog post, “Staging Your Overland Park Home to Sell – What is that Smell?”  This week I want to share my best tips for removing these pesky odors from your home so your buyers (and you) will love the way your home smells.

First and foremost, my number one tip is to open the windows and doors and let some fresh air come into your home. Once you’ve done that, there are several non-toxic products that I use on a regular basis that work wonders on many odors:

Baking soda –

  • sprinkle (use a flour sifter if you have one) on dirty carpet, let set overnight and vacuum in the morning
  • set open bowls of baking soda throughout the house and the odors will be absorbed
  • use in the bottom of your trash cans or trash bags

Distilled white vinegar –

  • vinegar kills mold and bacteria
  • pour it in ice cube trays, freeze and use the frozen cubes in your garbage disposal
  • use 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water in your microwave to remove food odors
  • use ½ cup of vinegar to a quart of water and simmer it on the stove to remove food odors (this also can be used to remove burned food stuck in a stainless steel pan)

Coffee grounds (fresh or used) –

  • place these in your refrigerator (once you’ve cleaned it out) or microwave to remove any lingering odors

Lemons –

  • cut and place in the garbage disposal and grind up

For a homey smell before showings –

  • take two tablespoons of cinnamon, some orange peels and simmer in 4 cups of water
  • place vanilla extract on the top of light bulbs in your lamps and turn them on
