Overland Park Home Maintenance – Mold

With all the rain we’ve had recently, many homeowners are faced with the problem of water in their basements. Whether your basement is finished or not, water damage not taken care of can and will result in more problems – namely mold. While mold is everywhere, elevated levels in your home can cause serious health issues – especially for people with allergies and asthma. As with many aspects of homeownership, preventative maintenance is fairly easy to do. Here are 3 tips for redirecting water away from your house that you can do this weekend:

  1. Make sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris
  2. Add dirt around your foundation so rain water runs downhill versus into your foundation
  3. Extend your downspouts away from your foundation out into the yard

Many homes that have foundation problems have been caused by a lack of maintenance. It’s not that hard to do these 3 things to insure your home is protected from water damage. If you do get water in your basement, be sure to take action immediately. Mold grows quickly and if the problem is not corrected, it will grow back.
